Startup Repair not working on Toshiba laptop

After checking other posts, I've already tried disabling the automatic Startup Repair from the F8 startup menu.  Even with that option disabled, it's still coming up and giving me the following error message.

The problem started after running Avast antivirus program on a system that hadn't been checked for viruses for some months.  Avast requested a reboot, and it kept going into these errors every time it tried to come up after that.

1st thing to try is a system restore in safe mode

Using the F8 Method:

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed. When you see this information start to gently tap theF8 key repeatedly until you are presented with theWindows Vista Advanced Boot Options.
  3. Select the Safe Mode option using the arrow keys.
  4. Then press the enter key on your keyboard to boot into Vista Safe Mode.
  5. When Windows starts you will be at a typical logon screen. Logon to your computer and Vista will enter Safe mode.
  6. Do whatever tasks you require, and when you are done, reboot to go back into normal mode.

to boot from the dvd drive at power on you will see at the bottom of the screen a way to enter setup bios or boot order menu

it would be F2 or delete etc to enter bios setup or F12 etc for boot menu

change boot order there to make dvd drive 1st in boot order

Are  you able to access Safe Mode - repeatedly tap F8 as you boot?

This could be a serious error and need tech support from a real computer shop (not leeks and peeks
at a BestBuy or other BigBox Stores) or your System maker's Support.

Go into Setup/Settings (BIOS/CMOS) often F2 as you boot so watch screen as you startup. Set the
boot order to CD/DVD to use Vista disks. Remember to set back when done.

With a Vista or Repair disk try Startup Repair - (the possible fixes are same as these though the titles
are named differently.)

If you do not have a Vista disk you can borrow a friends as they are not copy protected. Your
System maker will also sell the physical DVD cheap since you already own Windows. Also you
can make a repair disk on another computer.

Also from the COMMAND PROMPT of Recovery Console (if possible) or a Vista disk

SFC /scannow
Hit Enter

and after that runs

chkdsk /f /r
Hit Enter

( Spaces between C and /   k and /  and f and / )

Retry Startup Repair after Chkdsk.

If needed after those you can retry System Restore from the Recovery or Vista disk.

Hi,

Avast is not known for causing or aggravating issues such as this. If you can regain access in Windows
or Safe Mode it would be a good idea to thoroughly check for malware.

If you need to check for malware here are my recommendations - these will allow you to do
a thorough check and removal without ending up with a load of spyware programs running
resident which can cause as many issues as the malware and maybe harder to detect as the
cause.

No one program can be relied upon to detect and remove all malware. Added that often easy
to detect malware is often accompanied by a much harder to detect and remove payload. So
its better to be overly thorough now than to pay the high price later. Check with these to an
extreme overkill point and then run the cleanup only when you are very sure the system is clean.

These can be done in Safe Mode - repeatedly tap F8 as you boot however you should also run 
them in regular Windows when you can.

TDSSKiller.exe. - Download to the Desktop - then go to it and Right Click on it - RUN AS ADMIN
it will show any infections in the report after running - if it will not run change the name from
tdsskiller.exe to tdsskiller.com. Whether it finds anything or not does not mean you should not
check with the other methods below.
