Error 0x8004230F unable to backup on Vista, Shadow hard disc copy provider had an error.

The above error appears when I try to back up my hard disc or create a restore point. There are no restore points on my  HP Pavilion although I have run CHKDSK . In all other respects the machine works fine. When trying to back up the program starts but fails with the above error some 10 seconds later.

What is the complete error message?

 

Follow the suggestions listed below for a possible fix:

 

Check if all the files have been created on the hard drive (or wherever you are trying to backup).

 

Check the Volume shadow copy service in services window. To check follow these steps:

 

a.       Click Start and type services.msc in the search box

b.      Search for the Volume shadow copy service

Make sure the Startup type is automatic.  Steps to set the services to automatic

c.       Search for the service

d.      Right click on the service

e.      If the service is stopped then Start the service

f.        Select Properties

g.       And in the Startup type select Automatic
