Unable to open diagcab files

Hello,

I should be able to open *.diagcab files, but currently there is no program associated with this file type. I have run disk check and sfc, but the problem has not been fixed.

Maybe someone can post a *.reg file that would simply add the required registry settings. MSDT is installed where it should be; I just lack the registry settings associating *.diagcab files with it.

If I cannot repair this, I will probably have to complete an in-place repair, which I would very much like to avoid.

Also, here is a command prompt showing the current state of my registry:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation.  All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>REG QUERY HKCR\.diagcab
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

C:\Windows\system32>REG QUERY HKCR\Diagnostic.Cabinet /S
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

C:\Windows\system32>REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.diagcab
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

C:\Windows\system32>REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Diagnostic.Cabinet /S
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

C:\Windows\system32>

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your feedback.

1) I was trying to open the Microsoft "fix it" file of "windowsupdate.diagcab."
2) I was having some issues installing updates; however, I have solved these issues and was able to install all available updates. In spite of this, I still cannot open the Microsoft fixit solution, and would like to solve this issue so that next time I have problems I can run the Microsoft fixit solutions.
3) http://sdrv.ms/Yv28gD
4) Not any more, since the issues with windows update are resolved, but I would like to allow myself to open these files so that if any future issues arise, I can run Microsoft fixit solutions.

I'm having the exact same problem as well.  Windows Updates will not install, I download a FixIt, and then the FixIt won't install because of the same registry issues.

From the system I'm working on:

C:\Windows\system32>REG QUERY HKCR\.diagcab
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

C:\Windows\system32>
C:\Windows\system32>REG QUERY HKCR\Diagnostic.Cabinet /S
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

C:\Windows\system32>
C:\Windows\system32>REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.diagcab
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

C:\Windows\system32>
C:\Windows\system32>REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Diagnostic.Cabinet /S
ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.

I don't understand why MS is making it so difficult to fix this problem.  Go post in another MS forum???  Are you serious???  Why not put forth some effort and try and help us.  We've already been to other forums and no one has an answer for how to reassociate diagcab's with the proper application to run them.

Unfortunately I had no more time to try and determine the fix to this particular problem and was forced to do an in-place Upgrade.  I generally find these either won't run, or fail halfway through, corrupting Windows even further...but I had a successful Upgrade and haven't found any issues since.  I still think it would have been easier to fix the file association, but apparently what do I know?

If you are trying to download the fix-it from this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976982

The file name for that fix-it is incorrect. Another KB that has a similar fix-it can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update/?wa=wsignin1.0

Not sure if Microsoft is aware of that broken fix-it or not but I hope they get it fixed soon.
