That foum did not help at all. Thanks for trying.

I found out that my dad clicked a suspicious e-mail, I think he got a virus and it must have wiped all of the recovery files, because when i hit restore there is no dates to restore too.

When I start it up it says " Windows has failed to start, this might be the cause of a recent hardware or software change."

Hi Martin,

Restart you r computer and immediately tap on the F8 key until you reach the Advanced Boot Options menu and selectRepair your computer (If you do not see this option, you will need to boot from the Windows Recovery or Installation disc). On the next menu,  System Recovery Options, select Startup Repair.  This tool resolves most Startup issues.

Dena,

I have the same problem Martin does. And when I do the "startup repair" I then get back to the following screen:

(c) Microsoft Corporation

and a bar with green bars scrolling through it from left to right. It scrolls for 6 hours (thus far). HELP

I had the same problem. I succeeded in recovering my data by downloading Ubuntu on another computer, and burning it to a CD. I was then able to start the failed computer with the CD and gain access to data on the hard drive, which I could then save to a USB memory stick. I will still need to completely erase the hard disk eventually to permanently install Ubuntu or to re-install Windows, but at least I have the data. A similar trick may be possible with Windows PE 2.0 instead of Ubuntu, but I have not tried that.

MARTIN, I'm in a similar boat. After installing some updates (java, ms security, itunes) everything crashed down hard. Now I can't run system repair (nope, not even if I choose it!) and can't boot from the disk. Can't seem to find out how to empty this thing so I can do a clean install. Sent it for diagnosis to the Geeks, they say hardware is all OK but software is causing this. But how do I even initiate a clean install from this state?

Some answers are harder to come by - and that's an understatement.

Tom
