How to get the task scheduler operational ?

In the event viewer, I can see the following event, which appears after each boot.

Task Scheduler service failed to launch tasks triggered by computer startup. Additional Data: Error Value: 2147942402. User Action: restart task scheduler service.  (Event ID 412)

The advice given seems to be invalid, since the scheduler service has all it's controls greyed out.  The service does seem to be active.

I'm not abe to tell from the message what it's referring to.  Does it mean one particular scheduled task failed?
Appreciate any troubleshooting tips.

Answer
Download Process Monitor from

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645

Start the program as an administrator (right click and choose Run As Administrator).

Set the filter to (the 4 drop down boxes along the top)

ProcessName Contains svchost.exe Include

then click Add. then set a second filter

Event Class Is File System Include

then click Add then Ok.

Then Options menu - Enable Boot Logging It will log the next boot until you run ProcMon again. Try rebooting and peruse the log for failed file operations.

Svchost hosts most services so there will be a lot of rubbish.

After rebooting, in Task Manager Service's tab right click Schedule and choose Go To Process. Make a note of the PID. Then add a filter to ProcMon existing filters.

PID Is <the number> Include

then click Add then Ok.

Which will limit the display to a few services.

Still a lot of rubbish though. You can't sort in ProcMon but you can File - Export to Excel where you can sort on Result column. If no excel use Filter menu - Highlite.
