WMM freezes while trying to import mp3 purchased from Amazon.com

Hi!  I have used Windows Movie Maker for several years.  I have Vista Home Premium.  Recently, I have had difficulty importing Mp3s purchased from Amazon.com.  They are traditional southeast Asia music.  I can play them with Media Player without any problem.  When I attempt importing them into WMM a small box pops up that usually shows the upload of the file but it just freezes on the screen and totally freezes the entire Movie Maker program.  The box cannot be closed nor can Movie Maker.  I resort to Ctrl/Alt/Delete to unfreeze the computer.

I have made many slideshows through the years without difficulty.  I thought mp3 was an accepted audio file.  Do I need to figure out how to change the file to wav or wma or do the codec thing.  If it's the codec....why for WMP and not WMM?  Help and thanks very much! Granny Prince

Answer

MP3 files can be problematic in Movie Maker...
Converting to the .WMA format before importing
into Movie Maker should improve the issue.

There are many converters available on the net...the
following link is one example:

(FWIW...it's always a good idea to create a System
Restore point before installing software or updates)

1) Format Factory (freeware)
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Format_Factory
(the 'direct link' is fastest)
(the file you want to download is : >FFSetup290.zip<)
(FWIW...when installing...you may want to uncheck
'all' the boxes on the final screen)
(Windows XP / Vista / 7)

First...after downloading and installing Format
Factory...you may want to open the program and
left click the 'Option' button on the toolbar and
select an 'Output Folder' / Apply / OK.
(this is where you will find your files after they
are converted)

Drag/drop your music files onto the main screen...

Select 'All to WMA' / OK...

Click...Start...on the toolbar...

That should do it...
