Hi pcdummy

Are you using an External SD Card reader? Or is it Internal? If the card reader is an external one check in a different computer just to make sure it’s working or not.

Follow these steps and check:

Step 1:

This package fixes a problem in which the SD card may occasionally stop responding on a Windows Vista-based computer. Download the Hotfix for your computer and check. KB936825

The following files are available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

Update for Windows Vista 32 bit:
Download the KB936825 package now.

Update for Windows Vista for 64-bit systems: Download the KB936825 package now.

Step 2: If internal you can try this:

Try to uninstall and reinstall drivers for SD Card reader and check. Follow these steps:

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

1.    Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Device Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

2.    In Device Manager, locate Disk Drives - SD Card reader to uninstall and then right-click the device name and uninstall it.

3.    Now restart the system

4.    Windows will discover the device and install it automatically.

If External you can try this:

You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

1.    Open Device Manager by following above step.

2.    In Device Manager, locate the USB Controllers - Right Click - UNINSTALL everything in the Category one at time EXCEPT the Category itself – REBOOT.

This will refresh the USB driver stack. Now try to plug the SD Card Reader and check.
