Is the AVI (Audio Video Interleaved) container format free to use for a software application?

I want to develop and sell a (commercial) software that is able to generate AVI-files that end-users can download.

I have searched and searched but can not find anything about the license terms of the AVI format, which is obviously a technology owned by Microsoft.
My question is: Is the AVI container format free to use (even in commercial purposes), and/or do I have to accept or sign an agreement with Microsoft in order to be allowed to create AVI-files?

I know that the data inside the container may be subject to license (for example if I were to use MPEG4.2 or AVC/H264). But what about the AVI container format itself?

Please help
