Enabling media sharing in Windows Vista and to make it a DLNA certified server

                  Equipments and Connections :

                  OS on PC        :        XP
                  OS on Laptop   :       Vista
TV                  :        Sony KDL-46XBR9 DLNA certified
                            Router            :        D-link DIR 825 wireless N 5.0 Ghz and 2.4Ghz.
                            Bridge            :        D-link DAP 1522 wireless N 5.0 Ghz and 2.4Ghz.

Problem :  I want to use the Vista Windows Media Player 11 to stream the media over my homenetwork to my TV. I am unable to stream the media to the TV, because eeverytime, I open the WIndows Media Player, I see the message "Media sharing on your machine is disabled, either the service is stopped or the firewall settings have changed. However, I have followed everything to enable the media sharing......like going to the networking centre and enabling the media sharing, disabling the password, and then allowing the media sharing in the Media Library and also going to the "service" and doing some adjustments there as well....but still can't stream the media from the Vista Laptop.

Details :

I bought this Sony KDL-46XBR9 TV. It supports the DLNA certified Network server. I know I can use the Windows Vista and Media Player 11 to stream Music, Videos and Photos and my TV is capable of receiving these feeds. I have done everything in my capacity to enable the media sharing on my Vista. However, it says, that My Media sharing is disabled, eithter the service is stopped or the fire wall settings have changed.

I am not sure, what is casuing this......I have tried enabling the service in the "Service" but still I keep getting this message. I strongly feel that something is preventing this machine from sharing the media. If you say ports are required to be opened, I don't know how to.....pl. help......BTW, I am using the Norton 360 as my firewall and for virus protection.

My Laptop, PC and TV are in the same home network and also my TV is connected to the wired network through the Bridge and the Bridge is wirelessly connected to my Wireless router.  And also I have files and printer sharing enabled and successfully being used on both. Some folders are enabled on the PC and I can work on them through the networked Laptop and Vice Versa. Practically I can sit on my PC or Laptop and work on the other machine.....I can stream music and videos stored on the PC to the Laptop and Vice versa but not using the media sharing ......It works on the Wireless homenetwork and mapped drives. I have a protable hard drive attached to the Laptop and I can access that as well from the PC.....using the wireless home networking.

Only problem is.....I am unable to stream the media from my VIsta Laptop to the TV......I did not try to share the media from PC and Laptop, using the WIndows Media Player......As I can do that using the Itunes library home sharing and also using the Home Network......That will open another can of worms as PC is XP and the Laptiop is Vista. Both my router and the Firewall are so configured that I can see any device coming in or going out of my network and are properly secured in every sense......My windows Firewall is disabled because I am using the Norton 360 ver. 3.

Last night I streamed my media from my PC to my TV using the Winamp Remote......but that is indirect....First the media goes to the internet server and then from there it goes to my TV via internet through the Wii console.

Also the stream is interrupted by buffering and as you know Wii is wireless g...which in my opinion is insufficient for streaming HD media......and also by doing this I am not getting the advantage of 5GHz. 802.11n wireless network that I already have. I want to stream the media directly to my TV and that is where the problem lies.....

Sorry......I wrote the whole story, just so that you get an idea of the network conections and the complexity and the level of my involvement.

Can someone help me so that I can stream media from my Vista Library to my TV and watch my home videos on my big screen TV with my famiy and friends without cuddling over the Laptop or PC?. There are many other ways we can do this......but I want to share Media stored on my laptop and PC  and view it on TV without moving either of the two from their places. and I know it is possible.........Need help from experts like you to do the proper set up.

Hello 1trrbld. Vista Owner

Ø  What are the services that you have tried to enable?

You will need to check if the UPnP Device Host service is started and is set to Automatic.

1.      Click on start and type services.msc, from the services Windows look for the  UPnP Device Host service.

2.      Right click on the service and click on the properties. Select the startup type to be Automatic.

Vista does not support DLNA service for streaming Videos. I suggest that you look for the tools that could help you use the DLNA service.

You may search for the tools using your favorite search engine. You may be able to find the DLNA tools that would help you use the service.

Hi Irfan,

Thanks for your reply. I have changed the UPnP service to start automatically. If Vista does not support the DLNA service for streaming, can I use the Vista Windows Media Player 11 to stream the music and photos is not clear from your answer.

I think if Vista does not support the DLNA, then I will have to probably buy a separate DLNA server like apple TV or Netflix enabled kind....But I want to know is.... what will happen with the enabling of the UPnP Device Host Service.

Your reply is important and valuable so pl. take out some time and reply a bit in details. I appreciate someone giving useful tips and help me understand the problem from the root.

Hello 1trrbld. Vista Owner,

Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Answers Site.

To clarify on the post above, you may use Windows Media Player 11 to stream media to the Sony KDL-46XBR9 TV.

To do this, you may view the link below provided by the TV manufacturer:

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C1003311

You may also verify that the Windows Media Player Sharing Network Service startup type is set to automatic and then check the issue.

In addition, you may check if the issue occurs with the antivirus program on the laptop temporarily disabled.

You may also view the link below for more information regarding sharing media using Windows Media Player 11.

Sharing your media

Also, regarding the UPnP Device Host service this allows for UPnP devices to be hosted on the PC and should be enabled as the Windows Media Player Sharing Network Service depends on this service.

I hope this information is helpful.  Please let us know if you need any additional assistance.

Thank you,

thx. for your reply Mary. I tried but it still does not work. in one of your docs. above, it says Ports opening.......Will appreciate if you can show me how.

Also find a Log on tab....in that whihc option I should select I am confused about it....if that has any bearing on it....I mean the one tab is Local on this maching and the other one is a network tab but has a password on it......and I don't remember if I had ever put that password there.....

So I am lost totally.....also when I started my TV, I could see my XP desktop's Windows Media Player and could browse throgh the folders but could not play any files.....

SO in essence, Meida sharing is enabled, and is working fine for XP......the issue wiht Vista is still there.....and files not being able to play is adding to complicate the mix....

So you have some work to dig in and help......Thnx. in advance.

Hello 1trrbld. Vista Owner,

Thank you for your reply.

To better assist, please see the questions below:

·         Is the Vista PC hard wired to the network or connected wirelessly?

·         Also, what is the error message when you try to view the files on the XP PC from the TV?

·         Are you able to view the Windows Media Player 11 icon for the Vista PC on the TV? If so, do you receive an error when trying to access the icon?

·         Does the same issue occur when the TV is connected hard wired to the network?

Also, please see the link below for information on the ports that should be open when sharing media to a device:

Sharing media on a network using Windows Media Player

You may also try the steps below to help troubleshoot the issue:

·         You may try powering down the TV and then rebooting the PC. Next, power the TV back on and then check the issue.

·         You may also check the firewall settings for the wireless router if enabled. If this is enabled, you may try temporarily disabling the firewall and then check the issue.

·         You may also verify that the SSDP Discovery service startup type is set to automatic.

In addition, you may contact the TV manufacturer to verify the network setup for the TV by viewing the link below:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/select-system.pl?DIRECTOR=CONTACT

Please let us know if this resolves the issue for you.

Thank you,

Hello 1trrbld. Vista Owner,

Thank you for your reply.

To verify, did the same issue occur with the antivirus program firewall temporarily disabled?

If the issue persists, you may also try temporarily disabling the antivirus program and then check the issue.

Also, for additional assistance with changing the firewall settings or adding a program as an exception for Norton 360, you may check with the antivirus program vendor.

You may also view the link below provided by the software vendor:

Configuring the firewall feature in Norton 360

Also, you may check with the device manufacturer for information on logging into the router to check the port and firewall settings for the wireless router.

Below is also a helpful link with additional information for the wireless router provide by the manufacturer:

I hope this information is helpful.

I now understand that opening Port and Adding port is the same thing. So I will have to open the ports on the router as well as the N360. I have the list of the ports required to be opened in order for the WMP to work. I appreciate this feedback and will get in touch with you again, once I have done all these steps.

I know what to do now.....and hope fully be able to use my Vista WMP as a DLNA server.

Also I would like to know how can I enable sharing between my Vista PC and XP PC. The real problem is : my XP WMP appears to be corrupt. It does not allow me to share anything.....otherwise gworks gr8. I tried to unload it.....it rolls back to prev. ver. which is 11 again.....so I am not able to use my WMP on XP to share it......As I have told b4, it does appear a drive......just a place holder in my TV's menu but cannot stream anything.  I am unable to unload the WMP.....Once I can do that, then I can reload it from your site.....and that way can get rid of the corrupted s/w.

Your help is truly appreciated.

It would be nice if when you are able to resolve this you would post the details on how you did it. I am still having this same problem.
