Vista Ultimate Defrag Runs for Days - Never Completes

My Vista Ultimate defrag function does not work. Clicking on defrag to start it's function seems to begin the process, but the icon never stops rotating, nor is there an indication that the disk has finished it's defrag.  I have tried this a dozen times, with the longest run period being just over four days.  My computer has a 320 GB hard drive, and is a Dell laptop.  I have tried to run defrag.exe at the command prompt, but get a message that it can only be run by the administrator.  I have not tried a clean boot, as I cannot understand it.  My only virus software is Microsoft Essentials.  Where do I go from here?

Answer

Hi mtstexas,

-      Are you trying to defragment in an  administrator account?

Disk Defragmenter might take from several minutes to a few hours to finish, depending on the size and degree of fragmentation of your hard disk.

To run the command prompt as an administrator, check the article below:

It could be possible that there are some background programs that are interfering the defragmentation process. Hence I would suggest you to boot the system in Clean Boot state and check for the same.

To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

Putting your system in clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. If yes, you may have to contact the program manufacturer for any updates or uninstall and re-install the program.

Refer the following Microsoft KB article for more information on how to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7:

Note: After troubleshooting, make sure to put the computer to start as usual as mentioned in Step 7 in the above KB article.
