Have a backup failure error code 0x8000FFFF

In the settings, the backup program refuses to recognize disk C, which is to be backed up.  Says the disk is missing and has no content.  Have tried running check disk with no change in situation.  Still get same error.  Still does not recognize disk C.  Backup worked a month ago; no longer works now.

Hi Peter,

-       Do you have any third-party backup utility installed on the computer?

Follow the methods listed below:

Method 1:

Follow the methods from the following article:

Error message when you try to perform a system backup operation on a Windows Vista-based computer: "Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF)"

Method 2:

Check for the status of “Volume Shadow Copy” service and ensure that it’s started and the startup type is set to “Manual” or “Automatic”.

a.     Click “Start.”

b.     Type “services.msc” in hit “the Start search box and Enter.”

c.     Right-click the service and click “Start” to start the service.

d.     Double-click the service.

e.     Under the “Startup type” drop-down, select “Automatic”.

f.      Click “Apply” and “OK”.

Note Stopping the Volume Shadow Copy service may disable the older restore points.

Method 3:

Start your computer in a clean boot state and try performing backup.

See How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 for instructions.

Note: After troubleshooting, ensure to set the computer to start as usual as mentioned in Step 7 in the above KB article.

Thanks for your feedback.

No, I do not have any other backup programs on the computer.

As I mentioned in my original question, I have already tried method 1 to no avail.

I have now tried methods 2 and 3,which do not solve the problem of the backup not recognizing disk C, and therefore having nothing to back up.
