"Error 638: The remote server is not responding in a timely fashion", when I try to connect to the Internet.

Title: "Error 638: The remote server is not responding in a timely fashion." What in the world is that supposed to mean?

I have been experiencing the above error (for 2 weeks now)every time I try to connect to the internet through my huawei e160 modem. I haven't installed any programs recently. I have physically contacted my ISP and according to them the modem is functioning properly and that the problem is with my computer. An IT professional friend told me that he once experienced a similar problem and the end solution was re-install the OS. I have done too much with PC to set myself back that far. Someone please help coz this is a nightmare.

I had the same problem. And just unticking the "Operator Assisted Dialing" Option on the "Advance" Tab in the "Manage Adapter Settings" Window did the work. Try It. You'll surely succeed.

Do you remember any changes to your machine prior to the issue occurring?
 
I'd have you perform the following steps to check if it helps resolve your issue.
 
Step 1:
 
I'd suggest you perform SFC scan on your machine and check if this is related system corruption.
 
Step 2:
 
If SFC scan comes out clean, I'd have you test in a new user account.
 
Also, refer the below link to fix the corrupted user profile.
 
 
Step 3:
 
If none of the options help, do a system restore to the point(2 weeks back) your computer was functioning fine.
