Can't send emails from Windows Mail

Hi

I have recently set up Windows Mail and attached my bigpond account.  I am able to receive emails no worries but continue to recieve an error message every time I try to send one.  I have included the error messages below

This one is when I send myself a test email...

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account: 'mail.bigpond.com', Server: 'mail.bigpond.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

This is when I attempt to reply to an email...

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'Re: Bramwell Station Tourist Park', Account: 'mail.bigpond.com', Server: 'mail.bigpond.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10051, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Assuming the settings are correct, you must disable e-mail scanning. See the end of this in bold. You will probably need to do so in that manner.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and receiving, and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for loss of messages. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your email

Note that for many AV programs, it may be necessary to uninstall the program and reinstall in Custom Mode and uncheck e-mail scanning when the option is offered.

Looks like you are running into a port 25 block. When you got that error
message, was your Internet connection being obtained from Bigpond? If not,
what you experienced is normal. As a general rule, the owner of the port 25
SMTP server you are using must be the same as the entity from which your
Internet connection is coming at that moment. For more on this anti-spamming
issue see

Are you using a laptop away from home? The available workarounds when
sending away from home are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP.
3. If you use the same away-from-home connection frequently, substitute the
SMTP server belonging to that connection. This is a bit tricky, but if you
want to go that route, I can provide more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail account,
configure it for POP access, set it up in Windows Mail, and use that for
your sending chores. Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked
like port 25 is.

I think I have found the solution and with the possibility that it applies to others its my responsibility to post here:

For sending replies using windows mail app:

  1. Either set up an outlook account and add it into the app. Using outlook I was always able to send and receive messages using the windows mail app effortlessly.
  2. Or, if you still want to use gmail account do this:

Settings>Manage Accounts> Select your gmail account>Change mailbox sync settings>Incoming and outgoing mailserver info

I guess most of you won't have problem reaching this stage:

Now under your Outoing(SMTP) email server the most probable address will be:

smtp.gmail.com:465:1

Change it to:

smtp.gmail.com:587:1

and boom! Try sending email. If it works do tell me.

This six year old thread was about using Bigpond mail in Vista's Window Mail, not Gmail in a Mail App.
