From the COMMAND prompt of your Boot Disk or Recovery (if your System maker provided one) run these
(you can run them in windows however they are more efficient from the boot disk prompt so I will list both
ways). If needed you can borrow a friend's disk (same 32 or 64 bit needed) as they are not copy protected.
The System maker will usually sell the physical disks cheap since you already own Windows. Or you can
make a Repair Disk as indicated below.

This tells you how to access the System Recovery Options and/or with a Vista Disk

Command Prompt of a Boot Disk or Recovery Options/Environment

chkdsk /f /r

sfc /scannow

The above method is better if possible.

Inside Windows - Regular or Safe Mode

Run checkdisk - schedule it to run at next start and then Apply OK your way out then restart.

How to Run Check Disk at Startup in Vista

Start - type in Search box -  COMMAND   find at top of list -  RIGHT CLICK  -  RUN AS ADMIN

sfc /scannow

generates in Windows Vista cbs.log
