Matshita DVD+-RW UJ-875S ATA device / NEW DVD BURNER__I uninstalled this after trying to fix problems with it...now I need a new one.

I was having problems with my Matshita DVD+-RW UJ-875S ATA device reading some dvd's and cd's, so I followed some advice to delete things in my registry.  That didn't work, so I just uninstalled the cd/dvd player/burner and am stuck without iTunes being able to download a cd or burn anything.

SO...I am looking for ways to download a new driver or whatever I need to be able to read/download/burn cd's/dvd's again.

I am pretty computer illiterate as you can tell.

THANKS!

Hi Kuhlcrew,
1. Do you get when you try to burn or read CD\DVD’s?
2. Did you try to burn using Media Player?
3. Do you see any yellow exclamation mark in front of CD\DVD Drive in Device Manager?
Open Device Manager:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Open-Device-Manager

Step 1:
The drivers for all optical drives are generic to the operating system; hence you do not have to install any addition drivers. Once you uninstall the drivers for CD\DVD drive, let the windows install the generic drivers.
Step 2:
Run the fixit tool and check if you come across the issue.
Your CD or DVD drive can't read or write media:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_problems Also if you have any third party CD\DVD burning programs installed, uninstall them.
Regards,

Hi Manasa,

Thank you for your response.  When I try to read a cd, it acts like there is nothing in there.

I tried and was successful at burning 3 pictures onto a cd using Media Player, which is awesome, but then when I tried to view them, again it acted like nothing was in there.  I took the cd out, and put it in another computer, and was able to view the pictures.

There is no yellow exclamation mark in front of my cd/dvd drive in device manager.

I ran the fix it tool, clicking on that I was trying to write something, and it said fixed but it also said that there was no writable media in my cd...although there was, and this was the very cd I burned the pictures onto after that, and was able to view on another computer.  I ran the fix it tool again, and this time clicking on that I was trying to read a cd, and it said that it was not fixed, and that there was no readable media in the device, although I had that cd with the 3 pictures on it (which was burned on this same computer, and could be viewed on another computer).

Any more suggestions?

Thanks so much,

Chris

Hi,

You could have drive issues as the CD/DVD is actually 4 drives in 1 case ( CD & DVD burn and
CD and DVD read). So it is not unusual for 1 or 2 parts to not function while the others do so
properly.

Burning at slower speeds or using the Master Format might help. A CD/DVD cleaner might help.

CD/DVD's have a +- tolerance and yours might read/write on the edge outside of those discs
tolerances. They can be realigned however it is usually more economical to replace the drive.

===========================================

This troubleshooter might not help if there are alignment and/or wear issues however it is worth
a shot.

Stage 1 : Please do all the below even if you have done some before as it is often the total
process which solves the issue.

Try this - Control Panel - Device Manager - CD/DVD - double click the device - Driver's Tab -
click Update Drivers (this will likely do nothing) - then RIGHT CLICK the drive - UNINSTALL -
REBOOT this will refresh the default driver stack. Even if drive is not shown continue
below.

Then work your way through these - remember the drive could be bad, could have a loose
cable or slight corrosion on the contacts (usually for a laptop) and other issues.

Another possibility is that the cables are loose. Remove ALL power, then check cables in both
ends. Remove and replace, do not just snug. For laptops you can often clean the power and
data contacts with a pencil eraser.

Some DVD drives do not use the Windows default drivers so check with the System maker and
device maker to see if there is firmware or drivers for you drive if needed.

Did you complete the troubleshooter for the drive that still does not work? There are some
registry entries that the troubleshooter does not fix and those "might" be the cause.

Check with your System Maker and Device maker for both possible firmware updates and
the correct Registry entries for your drive.

These are the keys I think are the ones in question - for the CD/DVD drive sub-keys of course
as there will other sub-keys in these keys. Be sure to ask for specific keys involved as well as
the settings.

You probably can find more info here and maybe even the exact registry settings for your CD/DVD
drive from someone with the same model.

Use DevManView to locate CD/DVD in registry (be careful and make a Restore Point before
changing anything) - find the device in DevManView and then Right Click on it Open in RegEdit.

DevManView - Free - an alternative to the standard Device Manager of Windows, which displays all
devices and their properties in flat table, instead of tree viewer

Hope this helps.
