failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50

I am using Vista 64 on an HP laptop.   I do not have a Vista installation cd but have the hp cd's.  The only way I can run CHKDSK  with out Windows running is to use the F8 key and select "Repair your Computer" then I get to the screen "System Recovery Options" and an option "Command Prompt" which I select.  I then can enter "chkdsk" and it runs, however after it runs I get an error "failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50" though it reports no problems with the disk.  Is this error message important and how can I get chkdsk to write the information?

I have talked to HP and they tell me I have to reinstall the original software that came with the computer to solve this problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you again for your information.  It seems that you agree with HP in that the only way to solve this problem is to re-install the OS.  This tells me that re-installing has a good chance of solving the problem.
