Update error code 0x80200056 in preview build download

I am trying to install preview build 9860 from 2 days.

I closed the "Settings"window when download started, so it did not downloaded properly I think, each time (twice).

But next time when I tried to download it, I got the error;

"Failed to download the new preview build, please try again later. 0x80200056".

1. What does that mean ?

2. And, is there be any problem if i close the "Settings" window ? I mean doesn't the system download the build in back ground ?

3. And If my connection is lost, does the download resumes or start again from starting ?

Thank You

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in the Microsoft Communities.

Sorry to know that you are experiencing issues updating to preview build 9860. Let me try and assist you with the issue you are facing.

To answer to your query:
1. You might be facing this error for multiple reason like change in date and time, corrupted system files, third party software conflicts.

2. Closing the 'Settings' window should not affect the download.

3. If the Preview download stops, then, there is no option to resume the download.

Are you able to install all the Windows updates without any issues?

First, make sure the date, time and time zone is set correctly on the PC.

Follow these methods and check if it helps:

Method 1:

Run the System File Checker(SFC) scan.

The System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) scans for missing or corrupted system files and repairs them.

Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833/en-us

(Follow Windows 8, 8.1 section).

Method 2:

If that does not help, follow the Microsoft KB article to perform clean boot on the computer and then try to install the Preview build 9860.  A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

How to perform a clean boot

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

(Steps for Windows 8.1 also applies to Windows 10 TP).

Important: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps from section “How to reset the computer to start as usual after clean boot troubleshooting” to reset the computer to start as usual.

Let us know if it helps. If the issue persists, we will be happy to help.

I have a similar problem. This error comes up when a new build should be downloaded. I tried sfc /scannow and Clean boot, but same problem persists... I also get the 0x80070083 error.

I have also tried connecting w/o FW directly to Internet. Windows Update works perfect and no w pending updates.

I have this same problem.  It is with a clean install of 10162.  I ran SFC and there were no problems.  After installing from an ISO, it will no longer do any updates.  I didn't load anything except the clean install of the OS.  I still get error code 0x80200056 when I try to update.  I tried loading a clean install from a previous build and ran into the same problem, after a few updates it stopped updating.

Running the System File Checker fixed it for me.  Be sure to give that a try.

It seems that windows update doesn't work very well if aren't signed in with your insider account. Go to the update settings and make sure that the update needs you to sign in or something.

For me that was the fix :)

That worked.  I am on a work domain, and was signing in with my company account.  I guess there are still some issues to work out for win10 clients on a domain.   When I sign in with the required Microsoft account, I only have intermittent access to other company resources on the work domain.  Sometimes I can get into other computers on the network, and sometimes I cant.  When I try to access other computers on the domain, I get asked for my login credentials, which you would expect.  But, sometimes my login credentials are recognized and sometimes they are not.  And, sometimes when my credentials are rejected, I can still get in to the domain resource.  It is hit and miss.

I would suggest you to manually reset the Windows Updates Components and check the issue status:

a) Press Windows Key + X on the keyboard and then select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the menu.

b) Stop the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

c) Now rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folder. You can do this by typing the following commands in the Command Prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

d) Now, let’s restart the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. Type the following commands in the Command Prompt for this. Press the ENTER key after you type each command.

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

e) Type Exit in the Command Prompt to close it.
