I keep trying to install my windows updates but keep getting the error code 80072efd.  it says my last updates were on 6/5/2009.  they are supposed to update automatically.  i have tried to fix it by looking at different answers on this page, but now it won't even let me search for updates.

Which edition of Windows and what Service Pack level, please ?
What is the installed antivirus/security suite and is a 3rd party firewall being used ?

Using Internet Explorer, have the system scanned by the OneCare Safety Scanner
IF anything was detected, please post the names of the detected malware and if the scanner could remove them.

If the system can not be scanned there, strongly suggest you download and save Malwarebytes Anti-malware (MBAM)
Once the download completes close all open programs and browsers.
Delete the Temporary Internet files cache from Control Panel > Internet Options
( In Vista , click the Delete button under Browsing history
In XP , click the Delete Files button under Temporary Internet Files )

Install MBAM now and allow it to update it's definitions during the installation.
Once MBAM is installed, run a Quick scan by clicking the Scan button.
Once the scan is done, click the Show results button.
Make sure that everything detected is checked, and then click the Remove selected button.

IF anything was detected please post the MBAM scan log.

In XP, the log is located here:
Documents and Settings\<UserAccountName>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs

Vista: Users\<UserAccountName>\AppData\Roaming\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs
