Error Code 80072efd will not install updates on laptop

I'm running Vista and I am unable to get updates on my laptop.  It's stating that Windows Update encountered unknown error.  Recent check for updates :Never, last update install 7/7/09.  Needs some assistance.  I'm trying to download Window Messenger 2011 and not able to because of the updates.

Please answer all of the following diagnostic questions by number in your first reply (no need to quote this post):

   • Which version of the Windows operating system am I running?

   • Is my PC running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows?

1. Always state your full Windows version (e.g., Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2) when posting in a forum or newsgroup. Please do so in your next reply.

2. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current?  What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?  What third-party firewall (if any)?

3. Has a(another) Norton application or a McAfee application ever been installed on the computer?

4. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

=> Ignore the APPLIES TO section if Win7; Access KB971058 via Internet Explorer (32-bit) only; Run the Fix It in DEFAULT and then AGGRESSIVE modes, then reboot [1]

[1] Full Disclosure: Running the Fix It in AGGRESSIVE mode will delete your Update History but not the list of installed updates in Add/Remove Programs (WinXP) or Installed Updates (Vista & Win7).
