Access is denied on 0x80070005

I am not on a network, how do I fix this problem?  How can I get a complete back up on dvd?  I am fairly new to computers, the only other windows I have every work in is Windows 98.  I want to keep my computer up to date, and backed up properly,  it took me over 7 years to save to buy it.

Windows Update Error - 0x80070005

This error code simply indicates a general “Access Denied” which does not help us in determining the source of this issue. This error can be occurring because of improper permissions (ACL) on a particular file or registry key.

I’ve included some troubleshooting to generally assist you with this error. Troubleshooting includes verifying the DCOM settings, resetting security settings to defaults, and then clearing the Windows Update cache before checking for updates.

Verify the DCOM settings…

1.     Click Start, and type dcomcnfg in the Start Search bar, and press Enter.

2.     Double-click Component Services.

3.     Double-click Computers.

4.     Right Click on My Computer.

5.     Click on the Default Properties tab.

a.     Ensure that Enable Distributed COM on this computer is checked.

b.     Ensure that Default Authentication Level is set to Connect.

c.     Ensure that Default Impersonation Level is set to Identify.

d.     If you made any changes to correct settings click Apply.

6.     Now click on the COM Security tab.

7.     Under Access Permissions click Edit Default.

a.     Ensure that Self, System, and Administrator have Local Access set to Allow.

b.     Ensure that Self and Administrator have Remote Access set to Allow.

c.     If any of these users are missing please add them.

d.     If any of these settings are not checked please set them.

e.     Make necessary changes, and click OK to close this window.

Restore Security Settings to the defaults…

This will help you restore the security settings to defaults on Windows XP and Windows Vista. You should use this solution only when a security change that had negative effects has been applied to the computer and when no backup is available from which to restore. This solution does not restore all security settings that are applied when you install Windows.

To fix this problem automatically, click the Fix this problem link. Then, click Run in the File Download dialog box, and follow the steps in this wizard.

Fix this problem

Important Note: After security settings are applied, you cannot undo the changes without restoring from a backup. If you are uncertain about how to restore your security settings to the default settings, you must make a complete backup that includes the System State (the registry files). Items that are reset include NTFS file system files and folders, the registry, policies, services, permissions , and group membership.

How to clear the Windows Update cache…

1.     Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator.

2.     Click Continue or provide Administrator credentials as needed.

3.     Select all the below commands, right-click the highlighted text, and select Copy.

net stop wuauserv

ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.OLD

bitsadmin /RESET /ALLUSERS

net start wuauserv

exit

4.     Now right-click the Command Prompt window and select Paste.

5.     Now click Start, click All Programs, and then Windows Update.

6.     Then click Check for updates, and see if the issue is resolved.

After you have completed this troubleshooting please attempt to check for and install Windows Updates. Let us know if the issue is resolved or persists.

I am getting the same error with this command.  However I think it's already registered by default with the name w32time.   You can start and stop the service like so:

net stop w32time

net start w32time

Hope this helps someone.
