I have new notebook ( HP ProBook5310m) with Windows 7 Home Premium.
No direct internet access in my company network( private IP, no NAT).
We have to use Proxy ( squid ).
IE or Firefox can authenticate against proxy without problem but WindowsUpdate always stops with error 8024401B
( ofc I use correct user/password data )
I tried settings
netsh winhttp set proxy [proxy_ip]:[proxy_port]
but it didn't help and I got error 8024401B again
Workstation with Windows XP have not any problem with WindowsUpdate
I tried FixIT ( see post http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/bfbdec70-e928-47ee-b073-665c4851bf4c )
After it I got error 800710DD ( now WidowsUpdate doesn't ask about user/password)

Have you tried to run Windows update while you're not at work? It sounds as if the proxy server at your office may be blocking that site from non-domain PC's. You will need to try using Windows Update from a normal internet connection to verify it works.
Once you have found out that it does work, contact your IT department at your office and ask them about opening up access for your laptop.
