Windows Update Error Codes 8007#### - Part 5

Pet Project:

https://aka.ms/Su0afc    This is a link to the MS Feedback Hub.

.

I learned that the 8 character error codes are actually built up from 2 x 4 character "words", ie:

.

.  *  "0x8007" means: "Windows Update".
.  *  "0x05B4" means: "This operation returned because the timeout period expired."
.

The specific feedback is asking MS for access to the dictionary defining these code words.

.

If we had access to it we could break down the error codes to at least get a high level idea of the problem. That way, when we can't find any other documentation for the error code (as is the situation for most error codes) we can apply general fixes to the identified problem

FYI: I have learned that 8007**** codes are also used by WSH, Windows Scripting Host. So if there is any indication that the error is the result of running a script you can look at this page to see if these error messages make more sense:

Summary

Part of the design of the “new and improved” <heavy sarcasm> Office 365/2013 is that to be more “user friendly”.  I do understand the effort since most users are not technically inclined (no surprise) so they don’t want to deal with technical issues (I just am not totally in support of the way MS did it).  MS took a few approaches to this “user friendliness”:

1 - the “Click-to-Run” (CTR) “virtual computer” installation

2 - new Code 0-# and Code 300##-## / "Something Went Wrong ..." error messages

3 - almost completely eliminating access to the local install version Office 2013

Unfortunately, MS did not bother to make available documentation for many of these new error codes.  So, for now at least, all we can do is collect answers from the forum identifying things that have worked for others. Some of the fixes are just “voodoo”, they are not really a fix, but coincidentally trigger the real fix in the background.

when the message cites code "0x80004015", just search for "80004015" here.
