Vista - Error Code: 80040216 (Can't install update)

I have a Compaq Presario Laptop working on Windows Vista. The touch pad mouse on the computer has stopped working for the past 2 days. I have tried to install the recommended update  'Synaptics-Input-Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad' but it has failed the on the past 20 times I have attempted with an error code 80040216 reported as the reason.

I have no other programs running and I have tried a System Restore to a time prior to the problem without success.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hello,

1.   Are you able to other updates?

I suggest you to try installing the updates in clean boot state and check.

To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

Refer the link below for more details:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows 7:

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow the steps in the above article to reset the computer to start as usual.

Also, try updating the touchpad drivers from the manufacturer’s site and check.
