The System Event Notification Service service failed the logon. Access denied

Whenever I try to log off and then log in as another user, or if I try to switch user, I get the above message. I am then left with no option but restart the computer. I am using Vista home premium and am up to date with SP and all important and recommended software updates. P.S. I only noticed this after the last updates were installed!

Hello garylh,

You might try a clean boot with msconfig and see if 3rd party programs or software is causing the problem.
Follow the KB article below for assistance with clean boot.

Hi GG090,

Thanks for posting to answers.microsoft.com

Try going to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services and scroll down the list to System Event Notification and look at the Status and Startup Type entries.  Change the Startup type from Manual or Stopped to AUTOMATIC, then save or click OK - Reboot your system to make sure changes take effect, then try the login process again.

Please keep us advised.
