IE Update KB978207 - Bootmgr is missing error

On one of our machines IE Update KB978207 was installed causing a problem on boot up : "Bootmgr is missing". Tried to use the Vista CD to repair installation but the DVD drive could no longer be read although visible in the bios. After some time we eventually got it working. We were able to boot from the DVD drive and ran the Vista repair twice, which incidentally reported no problems found with system files. This was the only update that was installed on the day. I need to understand why this would cause the problem, I'm concerned that our other pcs will experience the same issue.
Thank you.
