Error Loading Operating System in Windows XP

My machine was working fine and then when restarted, displayed the message "Error Loading Operating System" and will not boot.  Any suggestions on the best way to recover? I have not tried anything yet, wanted to determine the best approach to avoid damaging any data that may be recoverable.  The machine was loaded with XP SP3 and all current Microsoft updates.  The XP OS disc I have is quite old, prior to SP1, so when I have had to build my mmachine in the past, I have had to go through the process of loading all the service packs and updates.  Not sure if using this OS CD to try and repair the OS on the hard drive will do more damage than good.  Suggestions anyone?
