Pairing new sculpt ergonomic mouse to its old keyboard/mouse combo receiver

I purchased an Ergonomic Sculpt Desktop https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-us/products/keyboards/sculpt-ergonomic-desktop/l5v-00001 a while ago. With new batteries, the mouse's left click only randomly works. So I bought a new Sculpt ergonomic mouse. It turns out the mouse came with its own USB receiver. The problem is I don't have a spare USB port. Is there a way I could connect/map the new mouse to the old receiver ? If not - what options do I have ?

I called tech support and they wanted me to visit a microsoft store 10 hours away by flight for this. When I pointed out the ridiculousness of this option they want me to ask a 'local tech support' if the mouse is compatible with my 'computer' or not. I am a part time tech support and am appalled at my own lack of skill for such a basic thing.

I have the same issue with my mouse from my Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic desktop set. I haven't purchased a new mouse yet because I want to find out if it would be able to get configured to the receiver that is used for the keyboard and number keypad. I don't want to have to use another receiver.  Nor do I want to purchase a whole desktop!

It is so hard to get the answer to this question.
