Error with MSXML 4.0 in Windows 7 (64bit)

I'm having a problem with MSXML. I running on a Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I'm trying to run a game called "Age of Empires 3 ".

I installed it twice and I keep getting the same problem "MSXML 4.0 not properly installed, the program needs this to run".

My version of MSXML is at 4.20 and it says I haveMSXML SP2 as what the details of the file show.

I downloaded "MSXML 4.0 SP3 " and "MSXML 4.0 SP2 " from here

and it gives me this error when I open those files

"Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exist and is writable."

I also went here and I also get an error at

Method3: Extract and register the XML files Step 1: Extract the file
(This worked with no problem)

Step 2: Register the files

    1. Click Start      and then clickRun .

    2. In the Run box, type regsvr32 MSXML4.dll, and then click OK .

After clicking OK I get an error and the error reads

"The module "MSXML4.dll" may not be compatible with the version Windows that you are running.

Check if the module is compatible with an x86(32bit) or x64(64bit) version of regsvr32.exe ."

Anyone know how I can get this problem fixed?

PS: I can play Flight Simulator X just fine with no problem and if I'm not mistaken both games require MSXL 4.0.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help and time.

Hi Echelon,

·         Msxmlcab.exe

Note Save the downloaded files to the desktop.

e)   When the download is complete, double-click Msxml.msi and then follow directions on your screen.

f)    Restart the computer when you are prompted.

Method 2 Extract the files

To extract the files, follow these steps:

a)   Double-click the Mxmlcab.exe file that you download in  method 1.

b)   Create a new folder on the desktop.

c)    When you are prompted, select the folder you created in the above step as the location for the extracted file. Then, clickOK.

Method 3Register the files

g)   Now it would be at c:\ now type  cd c:\users\<username>\desktop\<name of the folder you created on the desktop to extract the four files>

h)   Now its c:\users\<username>\desktop\<name of the folder you created on the desktop to extract the four files> now type regsvr32 MSXML4.dll and then click OK.

Note You should receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in msxml4.dll succeeded.

i)     Click OK.

Now check if you run the game.

Method 4

If the above steps fail then I would suggest that you try to run the MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 (Microsoft XML Core Services) and the game installed in the compatible mode and check if it works.

Make older programs run in this version of Windows

Hope this helps!
