Civilization II: Gold Edition--worked in XP--not working in Windows 7

I checked the compatibility guide, but it's not there.  An older version is, but not the version I use.

It worked fine in XP and it installs and loads up to play, but then this error code pops up:

Civ2.exe has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

If I uninstall and then reinstall it, I get this error message:

Unsupported 16-bit Application

This program or feature "\???\E:\WIN_9~13\IVI_95NT.exe" cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit versions of Windows.  Please contact the software vendor to ask if a 64-bit Window compatible version is available.

When I click on OK, I get this error message:

SEVERE

Could not run the Indeo Installer.

Please run the IVI_95NT.exe from the Indeo directory on the CD.

At one time I could pull up a window (that I can't find now) that said something along the line of "play in Windows XP mode", but it doesn't come up now and it never worked when I tried that too--which is weird because it worked in XP.

Can anyone help me...I tried the CIVfan site, but no one has answered my question there.

Thanks.

Hello Deonandceleste.

It sounds like you're using a 64-bit version of Windows, if its true then no you won't be able to run Civ 2.  64-bit Windows has no compatibility for running 16-bit software.

*However* if you're running the Professional version you can download Virtual PC, and with it get a copy of Windows XP to use.  This won't be much good for newer 3D accelerated games, but for Civ 2 it'll work fine.  If you're not using Professional or Ultimate however you'd need to supply your own licenced copy of Windows XP.

deonandceleste:

I agree with what Mr. Smith said.  Windows 7 Pro and the free Virtual PC is probably the way to go with Civ 2.  I used to be a REALLY big Civ2/Civ3 fan (until I got married) and I can't see any reason why Civ2 won't run in a modern Windows 7 Machine using para-virtualization of 32 Bit XP.  The only caveat is that some of the Movies and Sound Loops might be a little bit jerky.  To successfully Virtualize Windows XP via Windows 7, I would recommend the following minimum hardware:

3 Gigs of RAM

Core 2 Duo or better processor (AMD Processors will work but they must have support for AMD-V)

If you don't have the Pro Version of Windows 7, you can easily get it for $90 here:

http://store.microsoft.com/search.aspx?tsq=windows+anytime+upgrade

There are other free Virtualization Solutions out there but they require you to have a two OS licenses (one for Windows 7 and one for Win XP) so it would be best for most people to simply upgrade to Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate.

Good to hear Win10 is Civ2 friendly - had to get really creative to get it to run on Win8 so have been hesitant to upgrade to Win10.
