Windows can't install automatic updates

Original Title:     Windows 8 does not Refresh - Does not install Updates

I purchases Windows 8 in October 12. Until about a week ago, automatic updates worked. Of late, however, updates are downloaded but Windows cannot install them. In fact, even the Refresh is not working. It says there are problems refreshing and it returns to the existing state.

Hi Prakash,

Thank you for posting the query on Microsoft Community and we are glad to assist you on this issue.

As per the issues description, it seems like there are certain updates that could not be installed under automatic updating on the computer. When you tried to refresh Windows 8, it prompts “there are problems refreshing”.

I would like to gather few information on this issue to help you better:

1) What happens when you try to install the updates? Do you receive any error message?
2) Have you installed any third party security software on the computer?
3) Which are the updates that cannot be installed on the computer?
4) How are you trying to perform refresh on the computer?

It could be an issue due to the Windows update components that are required while running updates on the computer.

You can follow the steps to check for the KB numbers of the updates by navigating to the Update history:

a) Press Windows and x key and select Control Panel.
b) Click on Windows Updates.
c) Click on View Update history.
d) Note the KB numbers of those particular updates that have failed installing on the computer.

However, let’s run the Windows update troubleshooter and check if it helps.

Method 2:

I would suggest you to manually reset the Windows Updates Components

a) Press “Windows Logo” + “X” keys on the keyboard and then select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the menu.

b) Stop the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver

c) Now rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folder. You can do this by typing the following commands in the Command Prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

d) Now, let’s restart the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. Type the following commands in the Command Prompt for this. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

e) Type “Exit” in the Command Prompt to close it.

Now you may try running the Windows Updates and check if the above steps resolve the issue.
