KB2810009: installation via Windows Update (but not manually) failed with error 0x80242009

Windows 8 Pro 64-bit, Office 2013

I can't install KB2810009 via Windows Update (error 0x80242009).
If I'm installing it manually, it installs successfully, but Windows Update continues to offer to install it.
If I rollback updates via System Restore or use Windows Update troubleshooter to fix problem, it don't fix it.
And I'm not alone.

P.S. WTF, Microsoft? It's a third problem with updates in the last three months.

Greetings Aleksandr,

I see from your post in the other thread that you have tried running the Windows Update troubleshooter and the issue still persists. At this point, I would suggest manually resetting the Windows Update related folders in your computer and see if that lets you install this update.

Note: Performing these steps would erase the Windows Update history from the computer, but will not uninstall any updates.

1. Press Windows and R keys together on your keyboard, then type in Services.msc in the Run box and hit Enter. This should open up the Services windows for you.

2. Then find the following three services in the Services list and Stop them (by right clicking on them and clicking on Stop) one by one:

Windows Update

Background Intelligent Transfer service (BITS)

Cryptographic Service

3. Open Windows Explorer and go to the following location:

C:\Windows\

and rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to SoftwareDistribution.old

4. Go to the following location:

C:\Windows\System32\

and rename the Catroot2 folder to Catroot2.old

(be careful here, do not rename the Catroot folder, you need to rename only the Catroot2 folder)

5. Now, go back to the Services window and Start the three services that you had stopped earlier.

Now, close all open windows, restart the computer and try checking for updates and installing them. If it fails again, please reply here so that we could assist you further.

Thanks and Regards-

Sorry, but your workaround doesn't work. I receive error 0x80242009 again.

P.S. Message 0x80242009 is a WU_E_UH_BADHANDLERXML i.e. this error occurs when Microsoft send Windows Update packages metadata to my computer. May be problem in Microsoft's servers, not in user's computers?! See: this issue also appear for other users, KB2817503 contains a bug too and in August Microsoft revoked MS13-061 (KB2876063) (KB2810009, which cause problem, is the MS13-074)

P.P.S. The same workaround doing Windows Update Troubleshooter automatically and it doesn't work too.

I can't install KB2810009 via automatically Windows Update (error 0x80242009).

If I'm installing it manually, it installs successfully, but Windows Update continues to offer to install it.
