Windows 8 Tiles won't open like Store or Mail

I have just upgraded to Windows 8 and cannot seem to open any of the new apps such as Store or Mail. They just seem to hang without opening. Any idea how to fix this?

Hi JamesDaBell,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft community!

I am sorry to hear that you have issues with the Windows 8 Tiles. I can imagine the inconvenience you have experienced. I will definitely help you with this.

Have you signed in using Microsoft account or local account?

Do you receive any error message/code?

Let’s try these methods and check.

Requirements for Apps to work:

1.UAC must be enabled

2.To access the Windows Store and to download and run apps, you need an active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768

3.To snap apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1366 x 768

Method 1: Make sure that the date and time are correct on the computer.

a. Check the setting for Date/Time by choosing the Desktop tile and then left click on the date/time in the corner.

b. Click on change date and time settings. And then verify the time zone is correct as well as the internet time tab has the option to Synchronize with Internet time server.

Method 2: Download and run the app troubleshooter and check.

We have developed a troubleshooter to address a number of known issues that can prevent apps from running properly in Windows 8.

The troubleshooter automatically fixes some issues that might prevent your apps from running, including suboptimal screen resolution and incorrect security or account settings.  If you’re still experiencing a problem after running the troubleshooter, please post in this thread for further assistance.

Some or all of my Metro style apps fail to run.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-winapps/some-or-all-of-my-metro-style-apps-fail-to-run/e89549cc-a369-4cf4-97f7-53040f6e037a

Method 3: Perform clean boot and check.

You may perform a clean boot to check if any third party application is causing the issue.

Step 1:

a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.

c) Click the ‘Boot’ tab and uncheck ‘Safe Boot’ option.

d) On the ‘General’ tab, click to select the option ‘Selective startup’, and then click to clear the option Load startup items check box.

e) On the ‘Services’ tab, click to select the ‘Hide all Microsoft services’ check box, and then click ‘Disable all’.

f) On the ‘StartUp’ tab, click ‘Open Task Manager’. In the Task Manager window under startup tab, right click on each startup item which are enabled and select ‘Disable’.

g) Click ‘OK’, and then click Restart.

Step 2: Enable half of the services

a) Follow steps 1a and 1b to start the System Configuration utility.

b) Click the Services tab, and then click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box.

c) Click to select half of the check boxes in the Service list.

d) Click OK, and then click Restart.

Step 3: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Service list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 2. In step 2, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Service list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one service is selected in the Service list, and you still experience the problem, the selected service causes the problem. Go to step 6. If no service causes this problem, go to step 4.

Step 4: Enable half of the Startup items

If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.

Step 5: Determine whether the problem returns

If the problem still occurs, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, click to clear half of the check boxes that you originally selected in the Startup Item list.

If the problem does not occur, repeat step 1 and step 4. In step 4, select only half of the remaining check boxes that are cleared in the Startup Item list. Repeat these steps until you have selected all the check boxes.

If only one startup item is selected in the Startup Item list, and you still experience the problem, the startup item that is selected in the list is the service that is causing the problem. Go to step 6.

If no startup item causes this problem, a Microsoft service most likely causes the problem. To determine which Microsoft service may be causing the problem, repeat step 1 and step 2 without selecting the Hide all Microsoft services check box in either step.

Step 6: Resolve the problem

After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration utility, and then click to clear the check box for the problem item.

Step 7:

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to boot to normal startup.

a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.

c) On the ‘General’ tab, click the ‘Normal Startup’ option, and then click ‘OK’.

d) When you are prompted to restart the computer, click ‘Restart’.

Morning,

I have this issue, when clicking store tile it pops up then disappears.

Over the last few days I have worked through these suggestions above.

Im addition I have installed all windows updates.

Domain is SBS 2011, I have also tried the adding machines to the domain using http:// connect and the join network way.

Have tried other suggestions from other sites like UAC on & Off

The issue persists. Its file when I logon locally, but any domain accounts the tiles don't work.

Have also tried "all application packages" to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

Ive googled this one to death, I see its quite a common issue, does anyone know is there a specific KB about this or any other ideas please?

Could someone at Microsoft pick this up please as it does see a major problem. There are entries all over the internet about this problem and it need a solution. Perhaps a reg file to re-register everything might  be a start

I'm having the same issue and I've found no resolution to date.  I click on the mail tile, it shows up and immediately closes.  However, I can go thru a web interface to get my email and leave this fine W8 feature to languish like so many others.

I had this problem and I got it fixed today. I had tried many suggested solutions over the past two weeks, none of them solved this silly issue

You need to re-register the Store: follow the instructions in the following link

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/35231-store-re-register-windows-8-8-1-a.html

(if you get Firewall service error: Run services.msc and enable 'Microsoft Firewall' service)
