I want to find a substitute for gwbasic to run under windows 8 64 bit and a versatile editor.

I recently bought a new computer and decided to go all the way and install windows 8 in 64 bit mode. I am having endless problems getting a decent

editor (which can handle newlines and returns in finds and replace commands) and finding a gw basic interpreter / compiler equivalent to run under this operating environment (small basic is an absolute nonsense). Can anyone help or do I go backwards to windows 7 or windows xp ?

Have you tried something a little closer to a GUI environment like Notepad++? There is an entire menu devoted to Search commands and the Find allow a search for extended (e.g. \n, \r, \t, \0, \x...) characters.
