Windows 8 Pro Upgrade in Virtualbox Mac

I have XP in a Virtualbox VM, and decided to buy the Windows 8 Pro upgrade, but the install fails (I get a hardware compatibility message, but no specific details) .  I've tried various settings in Virtualbox, but to no avail.  Any ideas?

Because the VM settings are configured for Windows XP, you will likely have to create a new VM configured specifically for Windows 8 and use that.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I finally got it working, by one or both of the following changes:  1--change VM type from XP to Windows 7 (saw that in an online article somewhere, before seeing your post), and 2--change the screen size to 1024 x 768 (which is the minimum requirement that was listed in the assessment tool).

Don't know which of these made it work--perhaps I'll test someday--but it's going now.

Thanks again.
