My windows 8 will not recognise my external device (Satnav) which is 18 months old and was registered on my windows XP. How can I enable its recognition on windows 8 so that I can update the maps?

Ive tried to download software to enable the satnav to be recognised by my new computer system but it doesn't work. I got as far as clicking on 'Install' , a message window opened saying "please wait one moment", nothing happened and I waited 1/2 an hour but the message remained on the screen and nothing else happened. I tried the process several times without any success. Does this mean that I am not going to be able to update my satnav maps?

Hi Joan,

I understand that you are unable to install Sat-nav external device on your Windows 8 computer. You also tried downloading the software to help Windows 8 computer recognize the device but still it is not recognizing Sat-nav external device.

As you said that the device was working with Windows XP but Windows 8 is not recognizing the device, it is quite possible that the device would not be compatible with Windows 8. I have checked compatibility center also but nothing was found related to this device. Hence to troubleshoot the issue further; please provide the necessary information which could act as a trigger to move ahead with the troubleshooting.

1) What is the model name and number of your Satnav external device?

Windows 8 Compatibility Center:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/compatibility/win8/CompatCenter/Home

Method 1: Install the driver in compatibility mode (Windows XP mode) and check if that helps.

If in case Windows 8 drivers are not available for your device, try installing the drivers in Windows XP compatibility mode To know more about compatibility mode, refer to the below mentioned link:
