Issues with saving Inked notes on upgraded tablet

Hi Everyone,

I'm having issues with my tablet computer and saving notes through windows 8 reader.

Inked notes are not saved correctly when I use a x200 tablet to write notes on pdf files using windows 8 reader. It looks fine while I'm writing on the pdf. But when I save and then reopen the pdf the writing is corrupted and looks like a bunch of random squiggles and blocks (sort of like old nintendo games used to look when they didn't work :) ). Any ideas how to fix this? Or is this a known issue that will be fixed?

 I upgraded from windows 7 64 bit to windows 8 64bit)

Here's a link of what it looks like after saving and reopening the file. I wrote "Ok let's try this out!" then drew a happy face

I have a Lenovoe x230 thinkpad table, model number 3434CTR

Other than the edits I made via the inking feature I did not make any other edits to the file. I just opened the pdf with the reader, wrote some notes, and saved the file.

When I opened the file again, the notes I wrote were distorted and corrupted. The pdf text still looks fine, only my notes are affected.

I have a 3rd gen. intel i5 processor w/ integrated graphics
16gbs of ram
hard disk size is 320gb 72004pm (no idea bout model)
virus scanner is norton internet security

I have installed office 2013 trial, but the notes look fine there, and in windows journal (and in sticky notes).

I'm pretty sure this is a software issue with windows reader.

I gave up, the issue is still there so I went back to adobe acrobat x with autoink plugin.. much easier and more options. Unfortunately it registers my fingers as a pen, but oh well.

I have exactly the same problem. It seems that saving works fine, but reopening the saved document produces these display errors.

The document itself seems to be saved correctly, as opening it with Adobe Reader X displays the ink notes correctly.

(From time to time, it also seems to "forget" some last notes while operating with a big pdf file with multiple pages.)

I'm currently using a Sony Vaio Duo 11 with Windows 8 Pro x64 without any system relevant changes.

Hope this will be fixed soon

I'm sort of confused why this is still an issue. You think Microsoft would make sure inking, one of the main features of win 8 (heavily used for advertisement), would work perfectly.

In the meantime I figured out, that the ink notes are displayed correctly by reopening the same PDF on another Windows 8 PC (normal Laptop, no touchscreen, no digitizer).
But viewing them on my Vaio Duo 11, the ink notes stay cluttered. (I first thought the raised dpi settings are causing the bug, but it doesn't seem so...)

I even found another bug:
If you add notes to your pdf (e.g. text notes, highlighted text), save the file, add new notes and save the file again, somtimes your old notes aren't displayed when you open the file with Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat X.
So you can't use Reader to add new notes to a PDF file with existing notes, if you want to be sure, that all of your annotations keep the pdf standards. Otherwise, you maybe can't use Adobe Reader to view them.
Other PDF Readers like Foxit will still show you all notes, but Adobe Reader is THE standard of pdf files, so the annotations should be compatible to Adobe Reader, too.

The bad part of this bug is, that it's not that easy to reproduce. I just tried it again and it worked quite fine... However I definitely have 5 files, in which I added many annotations using only the Reader App. Viewing them in Reader, all annotations are still existing. Viewing them with Adobe, only the last ones are displayed. (This was quite annoying, cause I hat to re-add annotations in 5 files, each about 120 pages, with Adobe Acrobat X)

In consequence: The Reader App currently is just an average pdf viewer:
- View a pdf and its included annotations: Works
- Adding handwritten notes: Works until you close, fails after reopening.
- Viewing handwritten notes: Fails
- Adding highlighted text or adding text annotations: Fails (Cause it sometimes looses old annotations)
- Deleting ink notes: Fails on devices with nTrig digitizer (see other topic)

The App has so much potential and a nice look&feel, however these bugs are killing it... :/

I REALLY hope any microsoft employee is going to respond to this topic or at least read it, but I doubt...

thanks for the info, after the fixes this app will be great to work with. Until then, I'll have to stick with my old method of annotating pdfs.

Maybe now they'll fix it with the release of the surface pro. The main draw of the surface pro is the ability to ink on documents. We'll see....

I've contacted Sony support, and the lady working there told me this is not a duo 11 problem because the stylus works well in other applications (I own a svd1121q2eb). So it seems Reader doesn't work well with Duo 11.

What I find strange is that this thread only has 8 replies, I mean there should be hundreds of complains about this problem. So there might be 2 reasons:

1. this app has bugs, but there are actually few people who use it to notice

2. this app is not compatible with N-Trig

I've also contacted N-Trig three weeks ago, but they did not reply to my e-mail.

I'm the one that started this thread and I'm using a lenovo thinkpad x200 tablet. One of the more  popular tablet pcs. I don't think it's a specific issue with your pc.

This are my guesses why it's not being reported more:

1. Not enough people use inking yet to realize there's an issue
2. Most people who do use inking, probably use it to take notes in-class and draw.. only a few of them probably use it to annotate pdfs
3. People don't know how to get on here and report issues.
