Hi Christian,

Thank you for posting the query in Microsoft Community Forums.

I would suggest you to try troubleshooting the issue.

Method 1:
Run a system file checker scan and check if that helps.

Refer the following steps to run SFC scan:

a) Move the mouse pointer to bottom left of the screen where you see preview of start menu and Right-click to bring up a list of Windows settings.
b) Click on ‘Command Prompt (Admin) to bring up elevated command prompt. Note: Click ‘Yes’ if it prompts for permission.
c) In the command prompt type in the following command: ‘sfc /scannow’.

Note:
It may ask for windows installation DVD to fix and to enable SFC to make more than minor repairs. Some files saved on your computer might get deleted when fixing corrupted files.

Method 2:

Step 1: Boot the computer in Safe mode with networking and check if the issue persists. Follow these steps to start the computer in safe mode.

a)      Press the ‘Windows + C’ key on the keyboard.

b)      Click on settings, more pc settings and then general.

c)      Scroll down to advanced startup, click restart now.

d)      Click on troubleshoot, advanced options, Windows Startup Settings.

e)      Click restart, select safe mode with networking and then press enter.

Note: Restart the computer to start in normal mode.

Step 2: If the issue does not persists in Safe Mode with Networking then perform a clean boot to check if any third party application is causing the issue, as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts.

Note: To reset the computer to start as usual, perform the step 3 from the link.

Method 3: Run Online Scan (Microsoft Safety Scanner).

A fast way to check for viruses is to use an online scanner, such as the Microsoft Safety Scanner. The scanner is a free online service that helps you identify and remove viruses, clean up your hard disk, and generally improve your computer's performance.

To run the Microsoft Safety Scanner:

a. Go to the Microsoft Safety Scanner webpage to download the scanner.

http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

b. Click Download now, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

Note:
The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Note:
Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

Hope this helps. If the issue still persists, please reply.

I finally fixed my problem,

AcStBmhE.exe error with code 0xc0000142 when shutting down was caused by a Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000, More like the Driver for the Targus Bluetooth adapter that came with it.

Removed my Bluetooth driver and it fixed the problem.

Is there a newer driver for the Targus adapter and Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000?

For Windows 8?

If not I may have to purchase another brand of mouse other than Microsoft?

Followed the sfc /scannow option and got a message that not all files could be fixed and refer to CBS.log for details. I tried to open CBS.log but got access denied messages. How do I read this file?

I did method 1 first, didn't help. Then I scanned the system as described in method 3, no problems found. But the problem persisted. Eventually I tested the system with a save start-up with networkin (step 1) and I concluded that it must have been a third party application, since the error message did not occur when shutting down in save mode.  So I needed to do the clean start (step 2) and it solved the problem.

Had this problem after upgrade to Windows 10 (which otherwise has gone brilliantly). Searched the disk for the file and this (in my case) is part of the ArcSoft software installed with the Epson scanner I have - ArcSoft Scan'n'Stitch Delux (which is no longer supported by ArcSoft). Looks like it is related to the updater or other background tasks ArcSoft use/d for this app (which I did not really want running anyway) so uninstalled it now as not something I need a lot of (and other ways, although a bit messier, to do it) which seems to have fixed it.
