Windows Home Server 2011 Support

This question is related to another question already asked in this forum - 'Windows 7 File Recovery'.  I want to be able to do an image backup of my SurfacePro.  I'm a long time user of WHS and love the automated backup features provided by the WHS Connector.  When configured properly an automated differential backup of the client is done nightly.  So it is really quick.  A complete ecovery of a the client is from the WHS(Windows Home Server) is relatively painless and quick. More can be found here http://technet.microsoft.com/library/index.aspx.

I have multiple systems connected to my WHS - Windows 7 and Wndows 8 desktop systems.  I had a little difficulty in installing the WHS Connector software initially.  It turned out the it was because I was logged into the SurfacePro with my Microsoft Account.  Switching to a Local account resolved that problem.  But I do get an error when I try to run the backup from Lauchpad - it reports the backup was unsuccessful.

Checking the event logs, I find

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface. hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.

. This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process.

Operation:

Gathering Writer Data

Context:

Writer Class Id: {e8132975-6f93-4464-a53e-1050253ae220}

Writer Name: System Writer

Writer Instance ID: {ac8cc39e-f946-4386-883f-8098859528bd}

I don't get this from any of my other Windows 8 systems.  Anyone else out there using WHS experiencing this?

Regards,

Gary

I'm guessing it comes down to the same cause as the issue encountered when
trying to perform a W7 File Recovery system image backup on the Surface Pro
itself. MS should look into this situation with WHS as well.

They should have had the time to repro the situation by now and post some kind
of informative response, but all they are saying is that they are aware of the
problem.

Previously, when I ran WHS, I too ran into this issue. I used this fix to correct the issue but not sure if it will apply in your scenario too. I had to edit the service permission using dcomcnfg.

There is also this page from Microsoft that apparently may potentially apply in this situation, though the article points to WS2008. I was using W8DP and WHS. I eventually dumped WHS for W8 all around. Let us know if either works for you.

For those following this issue.  A patch has been made available.  See http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/surfpro-surfusingpro/backup-to-windows-home-server-2011-hotfix/0a739ecd-7d92-4e95-842e-23589a2140bb.

It's a general solution for the UEFI/GPT backup issues using WHS 2011.  But it doesn't solve all the issues for the Surface Pro.  Looks like the orginal issue was a combination of the UEFI and 'space issue' in http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/surfpro-surfgetstart/windows-7-file-recovery/a73b83ff-2511-44d9-b8a7-85bfd1135e87.
