Hi,

Thank you for posting the query in Microsoft community!
As I understand you are not able to boot to the desktop.

Let's perform a startup repair using Windows 8 bootable DVD or USB drive and check if that helps.

a) Insert the installation DVD or USB and boot Windows 8 from it.

b) In the ‘Windows setup’ page select the ‘language to install’, ‘Time and currency format’ and the ‘keyboard or input method’ and click on ‘next’.

c) Click on ‘Repair your computer’ and select ‘Troubleshoot’.

d) Click on ‘Advanced options’ and select ‘Automatic Repair’ and select the operating system.

Hope it helps. For any further Windows related assistance, feel free to contact us and we will be happy to help.

Hi Anannya,

I don't have the bootable DVD or USB, I installed windows 8 from the online download provided by the Microsoft site.  How do I get the USB or DVD?

I am having the same issue.  I also installed using the download so I have no CD.
I have an HP Pavailaon Elite running Intel i7 with 12 Gigs of ram.  Is the blinking screen part of the install?

James your computer should be able to handle window 8, I wonder are others having the same issue.  My computer never got past the blinking screen, I can't get to the start screen or login screen (where you need to swipe up to get to the start screen) for that matter.

I agree I actually had the consumer preview running on it at one point. I got through the inital install with a blinking screen in which it install apps etc, then left me nothink but a blinking screen with a cursor that moves and has the "working" circle blinking from left to right.  I am not sure if it is installing still or not?

yes that is the same thing I get, you are able to move the cursor, which gives you the indication that the computer hasn't frozen but yet it does nothing but blink continuously.

I just tried restarting my computer but got to the same screen.  And there is not option to revert back to windows 7 in anyway. I also just tried hard wiring it to my network but again not luck.

I have windows 8 working on the computer that I had issues with previously.  I was in contact with Microsoft tech support and they did a great job in helping me with my problem.  James since you are having the same issue I am, I will let you know the main key to getting Window 8 working on your computer is to download the ISO file to a blank DVD and boot from that DVD.

Steps I did to get my computer working:
1. Spoke to Tech Support
2. On a spare computer went to the windows 8 order confirmation email that was sent from Microsoft
3. Clicked on the order number, this link will open your order from Microsoft
4. Go down to the bottom of the page, below the "Print Receipt" button and click the "install windows" button
5. Go through the prompts that you have previously seen and download the OS
6. Once it has been downloaded, there will be 3 install options given to you, one is install now, the second is install to media, and the third is install later.  Choose the second option "Install as Media"
7.  After that choose Download ISO File, this will download the file to a specified location on your hard drive.
8.  If you don't already have the Microsoft Download Tool, search for that and download and install.
9.  Once you have the Download Tool, use that and you blank DVD (DVD has to be at least 3GB) to create a bootable DVD.
10.  Insert that Windows 8 install DVD into the computer that has issues and tell the hard drive to boot from the cd/dvd player.
11.  Once you have done the re-install Windows 8.  Have your product key ready, the same one that was used before.

This is what i did and now Windows 8 is working properly on my computer.

I have the same problem but I have a disk. My computer won't recognize the DVD drive once it starts blinking between the app screen and the desktop screen. If I boot from the DVD it won't allow me to reload windows 8 from the disk.  I have been at this for 6 hours with no success.
