Windows 8 Department of Justice Virus

Help!!! I now have the Deparment of Justice virus on my Windows 8 desktop.  It presents a white screen with some bull about copyright infringement and some other ridiculous garbage that I won't justify by repeating it.  It then claims that the computer can be restored by paying a fee. It then references a bunch of Disney pictures I was looking at on Internet Explorer (which I've also been having trouble with).

I know it's a virus, I've read about it places, including here. The instructions I've read start off by saying start Windows in Safe Mode but I cannot find any info on how to do that in Windows 8.  I read to use Shift F8 but it doesn't work.  I am desperately seeking help!!

That virus is called FBI MoneyPak.  If you have access to the Start Screen, type MSCONFIG.  Open the file and click the Boot tab.  Click the Safe Boot check box and click OK.  Restart your computer when it prompts, and try from there.  I do not know of any keyboard shortcuts to get into safe boot.

Thanks, I appreciate your help.  But I've been to that site.  I assume "mash" means press the key over and over.  I've tried "mashing" holding tapping the F8 key while holding SHIFT and without it.  Cannot get into Safe mode.  This is so infuriating.

Try this webpage: http://www.nextofwindows.com/3-ways-to-fire-up-windows-8-advanced-boot-options/.  I can get into the option with both of the second safe boot options, and you have to be in Windows to use the first.

 Hi,

Do you have an installation DVD or Repair Disk? If so, try this..(even a Win 7 disk might work)

 1) Boot from the Windows 8 DVD
 2) Select Next
 3) Select Repair your computer

 4) Select Troubleshoot
 5) Select Advanced Options
 6) Select Command Prompt

 7) Type - Bcdedit /set {bootmgr} displaybootmenu yes       (take note of spaces)
 8) Type - exit

 9) Reboot

10) At the boot screen select F8
11) Select Safe mode with Networking

This can then be turned off when finished.

 1) Start Command Prompt (Admin) by right clicking lower left corner when Start pops up.

 2) Type - Bcdedit /set {bootmgr} displaybootmenu no       (take note of spaces)
 3) Type - exit

Here is how to remove the latest version: http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/38039/remove-latest-fbi-money-pack-virus-despite-safe-mode-forced-restart/.

This doesn't work for me.  First of all it doesn't recognize a c: directory.  It shows an x: directory.  Second, the slashes go the other way.  Third, it does not recognize control.exe

Sorry, that was for the FBI MoneyPak GreenDot version, not the Department of Justice version.  When I posted that link, I only thought there were the FBI MoneyPak and the GreenDot MoneyPak version.  Could you boot into safe mode using the NextOfWindows link?

I don't know what NextOfWindows link is, but I got to the advanced Troubleshooting screen.

For those who need to get to the troubleshooting screen in Windows 8:

When you boot your computer, assuming you can get to the login screen, click the power button at the bottom right of the screen, hold SHIFT and select restart.  That will bring you to the troubleshooting screen instead of booting Windows. Starting while holding or tapping the F8 key or the SHIFT F8 key does not work for me.

Now back to the Department of Justice virus, none of the suggestions above have worked for me.  Does anyone have any other suggestions.  Greatly appreciated!
