Windows 8 - Create USB recovery drive does not complete

I just got a new computer with Windows 8.  I've been trying to make a USB recovery drive and copy the recovery partition since Windows 8 was pre-loaded.  It gets to about 98/99% and just hangs.  It does not complete, I've let it run for 6 hrs to no end.  I've got a 32GB USB and it said I needed one with 16GB of space.  I've tried this several times without it completing.  The good is that if I don't try to copy the partition I get it to complete but I need a copy of the partition since Windows 8 was pre-loaded.  Any help on how to solve this?

Hi,

Good to know that you are using windows 8.

We cannot copy paste recovery partition, the ability to make recovery or restore discs is provided by the computer manufacturer so you'd need to check with them to see how to do this on your new computer.

However you want to know how to create a system image of a Windows 8 PC:

A system image is an exact copy of a drive. By default, a system image includes the drives required for Windows to run. It also includes Windows and your system settings, programs, and files. You can use a system image to restore the contents of your computer if your hard disk or computer ever stops working. When you restore your computer from a system image, it's a complete restoration—you can't choose individual items to restore, and all of your current programs, system settings, and files are replaced with the contents of the system image.

Steps to refer to:

a. Hold Windows key+ X and click Control Panel.

b. Go to All Control Panel Items then click on Windows 7 File Recovery

and on the left top corner you will see system image option.

c. You may click on it and follow the onscreen prompts.

Hi,

No,

because I don't want image to DVD, because some notebook don't come with DVD reader.

I prefer on USB key.

But some time is blocked to 99% and never finish.  I don't know why.

I try to deinstall anti-virus and I kill a lot software before doing and is blocked again at 99%.

On other notebook In the past if power management was not at "NEVER" is doing that.

Hi Francois,

Step 1:
First format the USB stick with the built in windows format tool. Make sure it is set for FAT32 and uncheck "Quick Format"
Step 2:
Then perform clean boot:

To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista, Windows 7 or in Windows 8

Note: After troubleshooting, make sure to put the computer to start as usual as mentioned in Step 3 from the above provided KB article.

Step 3:
Then try to take the back up.

Hope it helps.

Mine failed to make the Recovery drive several times, but I didn't need to do any of that stuff in the previous message.  I just sat by the machine reading a book for an hour, and moved the pointer every few minutes to stop it going to sleep.  It was quite amusing to move it to the end of the green status bar, so I could see it was still moving!

Result - 1 complete Recovery USB stick.
