How do I repair Windows 8 boot\bcd error

Received error code 0*0000098c after deleting Ubuntu dual boot from my computer. Need to repair my Windows 8 PC. I do not have my installation media as I have lost it. Is there anyway to get my OS back? Using a Windows 7 recovery disk, it says that it cannot locate my operating system.

Hi,

If you have purchased Windows 8 online, then you would have a download link on your e-mail which you had subscribed at the time of purchase. I would suggest you to log in and download Windows 8 again and create a bootable media. Once you create a boot able media then perform a startup repair.

Refer to this link:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977640

(Applies to Windows 8 as well)

If you have successfully created  Windows 8 bootable DVD or USB drive then using the same perform a startup repair and check if that helps.
a) Insert the installation DVD or USB and boot Windows 8 from it.
b) In the ‘Windows setup’ page select the language to install’, ‘Time and currency format’ and the ‘keyboard or input method’ and click on ‘next’.
c) Click on ‘Repair your computer’ and select ‘Troubleshoot’.
d) Click on ‘Advanced options’ and select ‘Automatic Repair’ and select the operating system.

But my installation of Windows 8 cannot be detected. I'm not sure if Windows 8 will be registered if I re-install it.

Were you not using a Windows 7 DVD when you got that message?  Perhaps the Windows 7 DVD was not expecting to find a Windows 8 operating system to repair.

If you have a friend with a Windows 8 operating system you can create the Windows 8 recovery media on that machine and run the advanced repair from the recovery CD you created on your own machine.  Or you can use a computer repair shop to create it for you.

I was. Then I downloaded it onto my thumbdrive. However, it still could not detect my installation, even after running chkdsk. Can I still reinstall Windows 8 on my pc without losing my installation?

Hi,

Can you get to the Command Prompt with your Win 7 Repair Disk?

Do you have a Win 7 installation Disk?

Is your Win 8 preinstalled? If so, do you have a button to push at power on to get some type of Advanced Options?

The point being is that you only need to be able to get to the Command Prompt at boot to use the boot repair commands... You may be able to skip the 1st 4 or 5 steps depending on what you boot with..

1. Put the Windows installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.

2. Press a key when the message indicating "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD …". appears.

3. Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click Next.

4. Click Repair your computer.

5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.

6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.

7. Type BOOTREC /FIXMBR, and then press ENTER.

8. Type BOOTREC /FIXBOOT, and then press ENTER.

9. Type BOOTREC /REBUILDBCD, and then press ENTER.

Hi,

I'm not sure what you would use for installation Media... If Win 8 is preinstalled, you should have a feature on your computer to hit a key at Power On to launch the process... providing the needed partition is intact...

If it was installed as a download, you should be able to re-download as an Image, and burn to disk or USB.

You could look into downloading the free trial of Win 8 Enterprise and burning it to disk...

Not to install, but to boot with and attempt a repair....Even one of the older Release Candidates would work...

The problem you are having with the Command Prompt not working may be related to extra partitions on your HDD... the old Ubuntu for instance...

If you haven't already done so, try deleting it's partition and leave as unallocated space...

Without knowing how Win 8 was installed, I can't say about reactivating it...

It should be possible, but might involve contacting Microsoft online or by phone...

Most new machines come with a recovery partition allowing you to go back to the time of purchase, you will have to check your user guides for instructions.

These options are built-in to Windows 8 also.  To access any of them you will need a Windows 8 Recovery Drive, or a working operating system.
