Windows 8 windows defender cannot be turned on

Hello, im having a problem, it says "windows defender is turned off by group policy, if you're using another app to check for malicious or unwanted software, use action centre to check that apps status, to allow windows defender to run, contact your security administrator to enable the program via group policy" i have already uninstalled my previous anti virus prior to upgrading to windows 8 as it was not compatible, however i am still unable to turn on windows defender due to this problem. During my usage of windows 7 History of anti viruses installed includes trend micro titanium antivirus and avira, but it crashed as i installed both(silly mistake) removed avira and my computer worked fine. moving on, after installing windows 8 which includes already uninstalling trend micro titanium antivirus, i tried installing avira again but it wasnt compatible so i removed it and then Windows defenders down :/

Hi,

I also have the same problem with windows defender and am receiving the same message. I followed these steps however to no avail. During step 1 when I click start, it begins and then stops immediately. During step 2 I am given the initial message to enable via group policy again.

Same here.  I have Norton installed and it is managing my firewall/antivirus.  Even if I turn that off, I am unable to turn on the windows firewall or defender in Windows 8.  On top of that, you cannot download from the App store unless windows firewall is turned on... I guess that one slipped through huh?

another same here.  I've deleted the pre-packaged antivirus and want to enable defender.
The answers given above get the same results as previous replies.  No go. Starts then stops.
Gives error message when try to launch - says using another app.  What the heck anyway.
Firewall is okay for me though.

I tried all of these solutions and nothing worked.  I finally discovered I had to go into the security settings in the control panel and turn it on in there.

This is what I had to do.

Uninstall the 3rd Party app in control panel. reboot.

Use the 3rd party's uninstall tool on top of that (in my case, the NORTON REMOVAL TOOL). Reboot

Go to control panel, choose ACTION CENTER, and enable the firewall and Windows Defender. Update Windows Defender
