Uninstalling McAfee

Many computers come with a free trial of McAfee anti-virus.  This anti-virus program can cause many problems with your computer, and many of you prefer to use a different anti-virus program.  Here I will tell you how to uninstall the free McAfee trial that comes with your computer.  Note:  this process applies to uninstalling most McAfee products.  When you run this process on any licensed McAfee product, be sure that your computer is online so McAfee knows that you uninstalled the product and can set the license status to available for use.


First, you need to uninstall the program from the Control Panel.  Now the basic product will be gone, but there will still be remnants of the software on your computer that will interfere with any other anti-virus program(s) that you wish to run.  To remove this remnant, you will need to download and run the MCPR tool that is available through this website:  http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS101331.  Your McAfee product should now be fully removed from your computer.

Thank you for the list.  I noticed that the direct link to the McAfee tool is in that list, but it is probably a good idea for anyone doing this process to read the instructions from the link I provided as well.

Might as well copy and paste this article for a version of Norton with Norton links.

 

McAfee is well known for being one of the hardest to remove antiviruses, as sometimes discussed (used to be a different title) on these forums. In fact, using both add/remove programs and the removal tool isn't even to remove it completely, such as in this case.

About "Note:  this process applies to uninstalling most McAfee products." - Since you have that additional comment it increases the scope of the article to include licensed McAfee products as well as the trial versions.  I think you ought to add a warning that, for licensed McAfee products, McAfee removal should be done online as only then does their removal tool update their licensing database.  You will otherwise have problems if you decide to reinstall McAfee later on as your original licence will still be recorded as being in use [a trap I fell into - they were very helpful and they did reset their records when I phoned them].

Just small update from 2017.

I had huge troubles with getting rid of this piece of crap from McAfee.

Firstly: Turn off its protection abilities in application settings.

Then: Uninstall traditional way from control centre - doesnt work for me, there was empty space in window showing what parts you want uninstall. So didnt work.

Then: download their software McAfee removal tool and this finally worked.

All went wrong at first try, when I wanted to uninstall, then used the removal tool, but without turning off the protection at beginning, it just get broken and it was running while I wasnt able to turn the protection off - GUI was broken. Needed to reset the tablet...
