I have windows 8, my Norton trial just ran out. Am I protected with windows defender, or do I have to download it?

I have windows 8 and I know that I can't download MSE on it. My Norton trial just went out. Do I have to download windows defender or is it already on my computer and protecting it?

Hi,

Welcome to the Microsoft forums where you can find answers to all your Windows related queries.

You need not download Microsoft security essentials or Windows defender as Windows defender is pre-installed in Windows 8.

You can refer this link for more information:

Since you were using Norton security, Windows defender and Windows firewall may be disabled. So, I would suggest you to check if the both Windows defender and Windows firewall is enabled and running. Refer these steps:

a) Press Windows key +F, type Windows defender in the search box
b) Click on the settings tile below the search box
c) Click on the Windows defender tile and check if it is enabled
d) Repeat the same steps to check for Windows firewall.

Hope this helps. If you have any further queries related to Windows, please get back to us and we’d be happy to help.

Windows Defender is not an antivirus, only an anti malware, and not too good at that. Try downloading a free one from one of the specialty providers. The Windows firewall is stateful and OK.

Windows Defender in Windows 8 includes the functionality that came with MSE in earlier editions of Windows.

... in other words, it IS an Antivirus, as well as being anti-spyware.
