windows media player 12 - cannot access an SD card

I can access my SD Cards through windows explorer with full read and write. The card doesn't show on WMP. If I double click on a music file from the card, it will play through WMP.  On my old XP system, the card showed on WMP so I could sync my playlist.  How can I access the card through Windows Media Player on Windows 8?

It's good to find you are not the only person with this problem.

Unfortunately, all Barbs links lead to a different problem and not WMP so will not provide an answer to our problem.

Microsoft does not want to allow removable storage devices to be used for
"libraries" which is what WMP uses by design. Microsoft has indeed changed the
way things work in WMP over the years. I've posted a workaround suitable for a
single SD card. If you have multiple cards, you will still have issues.

*I* understand the unhappiness with this. I do not have a work around for
multiple cards.

(Microsoft sees the cloud as the only solution for sharing between devices and
that does not work for everyone).

OK Barb,

You are saying that support of memory cards (SD or otherwise) was removed from Windows 8 Media Centre Pack.  It worked in WMP11, is that dependent up operating system? Please remember that it is only CARDS from my inbuilt reader that do not show

I can find nothing that says support has been removed, but is mentioned as available in some articles (trouble is I do not recall where as I have done a lot of trawling for this problem including web searches),

ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE have I found reference to memory card support being withdraw from WMP and if it had, why can it be there when attached through usb?

I have multiple devices, mini PC, Tablets, mp4 and mp3 players and nearly all rely on microSD to extend their memory. With the size of music, photos and video  collections etc., it makes sense to put  a collection onto a Card. Have you tried to sync parts of a collection through a different device to that previously, in addition to any other sync you may wish to do to the device. Some devices show removable memory as a separate entry in File Explorer and that is as a Memory Card, Flash Card or whatever! These like any other usb connected CARD appears in WMP.

I know the reader works fine with any other Ms OS, I multi boot, so its either the device driver (checked), Win 8 or WMP

Do you still think I am barking up the wrong tree? There is something wrong here!!

Hi TomVd

Does the Card show if attached through usb reader?

The SD card in a card reader does not show in WMP. However, if I use my GPS with an SD slot, it does show in WMP.  I don't like pulling my GPS out of the vehicle just to use it for a card reader.

That means you have the same problem as I do re the way the problem exhibits.

As an aside, I use a Laptop with 4 usb sockets which are usually in use and although I use a Hub in addition there are problems because of power needs amongst others. I rely on my reader.

Have a look on ebay, there are load of readers (adapters) for £1 although UK sources are more. Its OK as a temporary measure.

Hi Tom

I have tried both built in and external. Nether show up in WMP.  A usb thumb drive shows up OK.

are you saying that if you put the same SD card in an external USB reader that
it shows up immediately in the WMP library?

you state "Some devices show removable memory as a separate entry in File
Explorer and that is as a Memory Card, Flash Card or whatever! These like any
other usb connected CARD appears in WMP" - if you connect a device like a
smartphone or mp3 player to a computer, it will behave differently than if you
remove a card inside it and place it in a SD slot. it is the parent device
(smartphone or whatever) that is interacting with Windows as opposed to a card
slot.

the rest of this is confusing, can you please answer these questions:

1. with an SD card in the computer slot, does it show in classic desktop Windows
Explorer?
2. if yes to above, when you browse to it with Windows Explorer can access and
play a track of music?
3. can you access it from the Start Screen Music App (should be NO)
4. if you open WMP by typing Windows Media Player on the Start screen and
selecting it, does the media on the SD card show up?

if you want a card to work the way you think it should work do this (if you have
multiple cards this may be a problem since you would have to mount each in its
own folder and index and you probably only have one slot:

5. Bear with me on this but if you use the process I described in
for this one card and then from the Start Screen, type

indexing options

and then click advanced, rebuild index

and retry 3 and 4, what happens?

Bottom line, Microsoft made a lot of changes in Windows 8. A lot of them seem to
work against the needs of multimedia users.
