NEF image format support for Photos app on windows 8

is there anyway to make Photos app on windows 8 pro to open (just open) the NEF image format files? I've got lots of these files and I don't want to convert them to other image formats. the conversion process significantly reduces the image quality.

Not sure I understand what you are saying. Nikon NEF files are being automatically converted to something else? Or you can't open them and have to convert them? What Nikon camera do you have? the MS codec currently supports:
