How to install iTunes on Windows 8 with library on external hard drive?

I tried to install iTunes (11) on a new computer with Windows 8.  I keep the iTunes library on an external drive.  I tried to move the media files over to the newly installed iTunes within the hard drive program files, but it doesn't seem to work.  I've been looking at threads over at Apple iTunes support and they are a bit over my head (I am brand new to Windows 8, having leaped over from XP).  Is there some simple way to straighten  out the paths on iTunes so that it will properly play songs from the external drive, show my old songlists, etc?

I've now uninstalled iTunes from computer.  Would like to reinstall without too much headache ...

Hi

Reinstall latest iTunes then please try:

1. Open iTunes.

2. Click Edit then Preferences then Advanced.

3. Click on the Change button next to the box for iTunes Media folder location box.

4. Navigate to the folder on the external drive where the media files are.

5. Click on Select folder.

6. On the two tick boxes below select what you want (I usually have mine both ticked).

7. Click OK.

Hi Jetta, thanks for the reply.  I guess I have should have been a little more clear in my question.

I already knew how to change the Folder Location, if that's what you meant by "click on select folder".   (I've kept the library files on an external hard drive for years).  I'm having trouble now with iTunes 11 and/or Windows 8.  One of the two of them (or both!) do not read the information as easily as they used to.

Find iTunes.exe and double click while holding the shift key down. A dialog box appears prompting for new library location. Perfectly intuitive wouldn't you say? HTH

I'm having the same problem. I tried the new library location with the shift key down after directing it to the external drive and it still doesn't populate iTunes.  I've done everything every website has said and I get no results.  Any suggestions?

Any solution to this ? I can't get it working. I'm pretty sure in the past I managed this to be working but can't remember how I did. I had to reformat my Windows PC and so I have to reconfigure this.

open ITunes, click on file at the top and in drop down menu select add folder to library. find your external hard drive in the list and click on it so the external hard drive is displayed in bottom text box, then click ok
