Cannot add media center as a feature to windows 8 pro VL

I recieved my free license key, but when I go to add features it only gives me a basic window and no where can I

add windows media center,

this is on a volume licensed (and activated) windows 8 pro.

There is no where for to add product keys etc as described in the download instructions.

Is there an alternative download location to add the feature?

I obtained my Windows 8 pro from MSDN.  (similar to OP)  Mine's activated, updated, yet I don't have the option to "Add features to Windows 8."  No dice executing it from command line either as admin

control /name Microsoft.WindowsAnytimeUpgrade

try this:

- Install Windows 8 (NOT PRO) with the Windows 8 productkey

- Then, if installed, do the Add features thing and fill in the Windows 8 Pro Retail key from the MSDN site.

- After the upgrade, Windows will reboot. Log in again and do the Add features thing again (Notice it's still there)

- Now fill in the Media Center Product key that you got from the Windows 8 website, if that's the feature you want to add.

Alex I have a strong notion that'll work!  Bummer it would have to be done that way though...and possibly have to burn 2 keys to get to the end result.  I hope to try that today.

Techguy77, I tested it myself yesterday and it works. I've got Windows 8 Professional with Media Center working with the steps i described above.  The upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro is an Online Upgrade so no need for DVD's or whatever..same goes for the update/upgrade to Media Center..

Best of Luck!

Reinstalling the OS is not really a solution though right? I have pro on and lots of stuff installed already, do MS has a practical solution ? More generally why do VL versions on the OS have these bizarre differences?

I am in the same boat. When I search for add feature, I only find the add remove windows features and have no way of entering in my windows media center key and having to reinstall windows 8 again and lose all my programs and settings is not a acceptable work around.

Same boat. Anyone found a work around? Or is there a file path that can be executed? Or is the feature enabling ability to add features really missing?

Irony redefined.

I bit the bullet...erasing my MSDN Pro install and installed nonPro & upgraded to Pro as you'd suggested.  Thanks again Alexvan Room!!!

Going out and buying a new laptop from someone who has purchased the retail version of Windows 8 and the Windows Media Centre pack is also technically a solution. But as with an OS reinstall - it does not make a lot of sense.

Anyone from MS on here going to reply with a solution or at least confirm this is going in the too hard basket.?

I installed Windows 8 Pro as a clean, new install, not as an upgrade from the lesser version. I obtained my version through the VL service. I therefore do not have the option to install Windows 8 (NOT PRO) and then "Add Features". Is there any other way to do this?
