Question

Q: Windows 8 Pro Random but Frequent BSOD

Ever since installing Windows 8 Pro I get random BSOD sometimes several times in an hour. The errors vary including PFN_LIST_CORRUPT, MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, WATCHDOG. There seems to be no pattern sometimes this occurs immediately after start-up other times in the middle of playing music with WMP of using MCE to watch TV or DVD. These problems never previously happened with Windows 7 Ultimate. The upgrade adviser said everything was compatible except for a few programs which have been uninstalled.

Thanks

Hi,

In "some" cases this KB article will help.

Windows hangs or freezes

Be sure to check with the System Maker's Support (Motherboard Maker for custom
systems), their on-line documentation and drivers, and ask in their forums (if any)
about any known issues. Be sure to update the BIOS, low level chipset drivers,
and the other major on-board and separate device drivers
. Those alone may
resolve some or all of these issues.

Note using Win Key + X and Win Key + W (to get to Control Panel, Run, and Settings
as needed). Win Key + D calls the desktop and the using Win Key toggles Desktop
and Start Screen.

Translate the Windows 7 methods and use them on Windows 8.

Resolving stop (blue screen) errors in Windows 7 - has a section for if you can or can't
start Windows (applies to Windows 8).

We can analyze the minidumps if you make them available from the SkyDrive or other file
sharing sites (such as MediaFire). If you have problems uploading the minidumps copy
them to the Desktop or the Documents folder and upload them from there.

Also do this so you can see the likely bluescreens.

Windows Vista automatically restarts if your PC encounters an error that causes it to crash.

Check with these utilities to see if any information can be gathered :

This is an excellent tool for posting Blue Screen Error Information

BlueScreenView - Free - scans all your minidump files created during 'blue screen of death'
crashes, and displays the information about all crashes in one table.
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html

-------------

MyEventViewer can be checked at the time of the BlueScreen (BSOD) to with-in a
second or so of the time of the BSOD to provide more information as to possible
cause - see TIP.

MyEventViewer - Free - a simple alternative to the standard event viewer of Windows.
TIP - Options - Advanced Filter allows you to see a time frame instead of the whole file -
set it to a bit before and after the time of the BSOD.
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/my_event_viewer.html

------------

AppCrashView - Free - a small utility for Windows Vista and Windows 7 that displays the
details of all application crashes occurred in your system. The crashes information is extracted
from the .wer files created by the Windows Error Reporting (WER) component of the operating
system every time that a crash is occurred. AppCrashView also allows you to easily save the
crashes list to text/csv/html/xml file.

Hi,

I just bought new PC from NCIX with premium installation since my old system was always random crashing on Windows 7.  In one day of use (Access, Excel, Internet), I did not get one hour without a BSOD.  I had to rely on my iPhone to try fixing issues.   I can't imagine I have to perform so complicated researches to fix my PC when the purpose of my weekend was to work on my job!!  I can't understand why Microsoft doesn't proof the machines against errors.  Why do a iPhone works for 6 months playing music, surfing internet and so on while a new PC with up to date stuff just brings you a more modern screen with beautiful emoticon when it crashes ?

I am really negatively upset and I am going to spend another 2000$ for an apple computer which will allow me to do basic stuff related to my job instead of a forced diploma in informatic engineering!
